They treat the review as a monthly punishment instead of a weekly maintenance task. Monthly reviews feel heavy, so they skip them. Then the damage is already done.

The exact 15-minute weekly budget review process

Use the same order every time. Order reduces mental load.

Minutes 0–3: Pull the raw data (no judgment yet)

Open your expense app or spreadsheet. Look at the last 7 days (or the exact period since your last review). Do not start calculating yet. Just observe the top three categories and any single transaction above 40% of your weekly food or leisure cap.

Minutes 3–7: Compare against your weekly caps

You should already have weekly caps derived from your monthly budget (see Budget Framework). If a category is over by 20% or more, mark it. If two categories are over, still mark only the worst one for this week.

Minutes 7–11: Diagnose the real cause (one sentence)

Write one honest sentence. Not "I spent too much on food." Write "I ordered delivery four times because I came home exhausted and had no plan for dinner."

The quality of your diagnosis determines the quality of your decision.

Minutes 11–15: One decision, written, scheduled, measured

Your decision must pass three tests:

  • Specific — "Maximum two food deliveries this week, max 18 EUR each."
  • Behavioral — It changes an action, not just a number ("I will prep two lunches on Sunday evening").
  • Measurable in 7 days — You will know next Friday whether you succeeded.

Write the decision on paper or in a note you will see daily. Then book the next review in your calendar before you close the app.

  4. Review the previous decision first. Did last week's rule actually work? If not, adjust it instead of adding a new one.
